PTI, Kuala Lumpur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India is being seen as a reliable partner for development, which is evident from the recent trade deals signed with various countries including the European Union (EU), Britain and the US. In other words, trust has become India's strongest capital.

Addressing the Indian diaspora here, Modi, who arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday on a two-day visit, said that Malaysia has the second largest community of people of Indian origin in the world (about 30 lakh, most of them of Tamil origin) and this diaspora works as a strong bridge between the two countries.

During this, the PM announced the establishment of a new Consulate in the island nation and Thiruvalluvar Scholarship for students to study in India. Earlier, Modi was given a red carpet welcome on his arrival in Malaysia.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim himself arrived to receive him at the Kuala Lumpur airport, marking a new development in bilateral relations. Later, Modi and Ibrahim left for the venue of the Indian community event in the same car. There were slogans of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Modi, Modi' echoing at the meeting place.

During this period, about 800 artists presented traditional music and dance. The two leaders will hold wide-ranging talks on Sunday, in which several agreements are expected to be signed that will further enhance cooperation between the two countries.

This is PM Modi's third visit to Malaysia overall and the first after upgrading India-Malaysia bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in August 2024.

At the community event, the PM mentioned India's trade deals with various countries. Said- “Trust has become the strongest capital of India.”

He cited trade deals with the UK, UAE, Australia, New Zealand, Oman, the EU and the US. Also giving information about India's rapid infrastructure growth, he said that the number of airports has doubled in the last decade, highways are being built at a record pace. Modern trains like Vande Bharat have received international recognition.

The Prime Minister, while greeting members of the Indian community in different languages, also highlighted the singing abilities of his Malaysian counterpart Ibrahim, particularly mentioning his love for the Tamil songs of MG Ramachandran (MGR). Modi said that Tamil people are serving humanity very well.

He also reminded that Vice President of India CP Radhakrishnan and Union Ministers S Jaishankar, Nirmala Sitharaman and L Murugan are from Tamil Nadu. Modi said he was very happy to come to Malaysia, which is his first foreign visit in 2026.

He said- "India will always accept you with open arms." Therefore, a few months ago we took the historic decision to extend the OCI Card eligibility for Malaysian citizens to the sixth generation.”

PM Modi said about the Malaysian Prime Minister present at the program that he is already his friend. India's success is Malaysia's success and it is Asia's success. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said PM Modi's visit has a rich agenda and will give a big boost to the special partnership between India and Malaysia.
