Jagran correspondent, Samastipur. Samastipur Fish Production: The district is moving rapidly towards blue revolution. Samastipur has created its own identity in the production of major species like Rohu, Naini and Grass Carp. With the continuous increase in fish production, this district is now emerging as a major hub of fisheries.

In the financial year 2024-25, 25.75 thousand metric tons of fish was produced in the district, while the target has been set to increase it to 29 thousand metric tons for 2025-26. This increase in production is strengthening the economy of the district as well as increasing the income of fishermen.

Fish farming is happening in 3362 hectares of water area.

Fish farming is being done in a total of 3362 hectares of water area under 1194 fish ponds in the district. Species like Rohu, Naini, Grass Carp, Silver Carp and Pangasius are produced on a large scale here. 60 to 70 percent of the population of the district consumes fish, resulting in a daily consumption of 75 to 80 metric tons of fish.

Despite local production, 8 to 10 metric tonnes of fish has to be imported daily from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal to meet the demand.

More than 1200 beneficiaries benefited

Many schemes of the Central and State Government are being implemented to promote fisheries and increase the income of fishermen. This year, more than 1200 beneficiaries have been provided benefits under various schemes.

Apart from the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, ornamental fish farming is also being encouraged under the Seven Nishchay Program with the aim of empowering the Blue Revolution. Under this, the infrastructure related to wholesale and retail ornamental fish business, breeding units, promotion and marketing is being strengthened, so that this business can become sustainable and sustainable.

Increasing interest among youth

District Fisheries Officer Mohd. Niazuddin said that there is immense potential for fish farming in Samastipur. Especially the young generation is becoming increasingly aware in this field. Youth are being encouraged at the government level through training, tour programs and various schemes, so that the income of fishermen can be continuously increased by promoting fisheries.
