Renowned sculptor Ramsutar, who created the statue at Gandhi Maidan, passes away

Jagran Correspondent, Patna. Famous sculptor Ram Sutar, who made a name for himself with his unique works in the country and the world, passed away. He breathed his last at the age of 100. The news of the demise of Ramsutar, who was unwell for a long time, has created a wave of mourning in the art world. His works are considered the hallmark of Indian art not only in India but throughout the world. He will also be especially remembered as the creator of the world's tallest bronze statue installed at Gandhi Maidan in Patna.

This bronze statue of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, installed in the historic Gandhi Maidan of Patna, is 72 feet high, with a base of 24 feet. This grand statue was unveiled by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on 15 February 2013. The main designers of this statue were Ram Sutar himself and his son Anil Sutar. On the initiative of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, influenced by Gandhi's thoughts, this statue became the identity of Bihar, which inspires millions of people even today.

Ramsutar was born on 19 February 1925 in Gondur village in Dhule district of Maharashtra. He studied at Mumbai's prestigious J.J. He received education from the College of Art and Architecture and proved his talent by winning a gold medal from there. His dedication and hard work towards art took him to the heights of world-class sculptor.

The list of Ramsutar's works is extremely long and glorious. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi in meditating posture in the Parliament complex, the grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj riding on a horse and the world's tallest statue 'Statue of Unity' built in Gujarat - the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel - are proof of his great creative ability. These works brought him international fame.

Ramsutar was awarded prestigious honors like Padmashree and Padma Bhushan for his incomparable contribution in the field of art. On his death, Bihar Museum Director General Anjani Kumar Singh said that Ramsutar was an international level sculptor and the grand statue of Gandhi in Patna is his immortal identity. With his demise, the country has lost an artist whose art will always inspire the coming generations.
