India's 'high leap' in AI race: A stir in the world; Will we be able to defeat China and America?
Jagran Team, New Delhi. After the unprecedented organization of the biggest ever AI Impact Summit in the country's capital Delhi, it is being discussed everywhere. This cutting-edge technology, AI, which is often heard by names like machine efficiency, artificial intelligence, is being considered as the biggest invention till date. Immense possibilities of its application are being expressed in every field.
It is being said that this will bring a revolution that will sharpen and sharpen the human mind. All countries are eager to gain control over this technology, India is also not lagging behind. Since this technology is relatively expensive and requires more resources, India also faces a big challenge.
However, it cannot be denied that India is equipped with human resources and it is also skilling this labor force very fast, in such a situation, if it makes its mark in this technology also, then it can only be imagined what will be the edge and speed of its human resources. Hopefully, despite all the challenges, this global event will not only become a big opportunity to establish AI in the country but will also be helpful in motivating people towards its use.
How to create a strong AI ecosystem?
The world is rapidly moving towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) and India also wants to establish a strong presence in this field. But a strong AI ecosystem is not created just by creating software or apps. This requires solid digital infrastructure, quality data, trained human resources, long-term investments and a clear policy framework.
First of all, if we talk about digital infrastructure, high capacity computers, GPU clusters and large data centers are necessary for the development of AI. Building and training large AI models requires computing power.
The second important foundation of AI is data. In a multilingual country like India, it is extremely important to generate high quality and clean datasets in different Indian languages. Also, data security and privacy are equally important.
The role of human resources is also very important in the field of AI. Technology will be successful only when the people developing and operating it are skilled. Courses related to AI and machine learning have been started in IIT, IISc and many universities in India.
NITI Aayog has emphasized on giving priority to education and skill development in the ‘National Strategy for AI’. The policy going forward will require AI education from the school level, collaboration between industry and educational institutions and promotion of re-skilling programs for the working workforce.
India will have to work towards becoming not only a user of AI technology but also its creator. It is extremely important to develop large language models for Indian languages, create indigenous AI solutions in areas like agriculture, health and defence, and provide long-term financial support to research. Public and private sector partnerships can play an important role in developing indigenous solutions.
The safe and responsible use of AI requires a clear and balanced regulatory framework. Given the risks like deepfakes, cyber crime and algorithmic bias, it is essential to have rules, but care must also be taken that these rules do not hinder innovation.
India's share in the world's top 500 high performance computing systems (HPC) and capacity is just one percent. At the same time, America has 35 percent of the world's computing systems and 48 percent of the capacity.
Rich in talent, weak infrastructure
India ranks 10th in Tortoise Global AI Index, 2024. Our biggest strength is talent. India's global ranking on this front is second. Apart from this, our performance in operational environment is also excellent and in this India is at third position. Infrastructure is our biggest weakness and in this we are at 68th position. Because of this, our ability to compete with America and China becomes limited.
India in the race of AI
AI Summit was organized in India last week. This was the fourth summit of its kind and the first time it has been organized in India. In this, a large number of world leaders came on one platform. The focus was on how countries balance innovation with regulation.
This event is also an opportunity for India to introspect about where we stand in the race of AI. Data show a mixed picture of strengths and structural shortcomings in India's AI ecosystem?
limited share in investment flows
India has attracted just 3 percent of global venture capital investment in AI training data. America leads with 56 percent. China is at second place with 17 percent and the European Union is at third place with 15 percent.
What do the experts say?
AI is not only helping in making complex plans and understanding scientific findings but is also capable of taking decisions in real time. It has not only increased productivity in higher level mental tasks, but also shown how much easier it can make working life. - Jaspreet Bindra, Co-Founder, AI&Beyond
creating problems for people
AI is helping in increasing production without increasing the number of employees. This means that its impact on employment generation front is negative. AI is lowering prices for people in many areas. This is increasing the effectiveness of families. - Vikas Singh, Expert, Holistic Development
The use of AI has started in almost every sector including education, health, agriculture, industry, judiciary and administration. In the coming five years, AI technology will bring revolutionary changes in human life. This will increase the speed and accuracy of work, save time and resources and open doors to new possibilities. But like every technology, AI also has two sides: development and destruction. While it can make life simpler, misuse can also lead to employment crises, privacy violations and ethical challenges. - Himanshu Shekhar
As people learn to use AI, they will perform better than those who oppose it. AI-based autonomous cars and public transportation will become more common. AI will play a major role in managing city infrastructure such as waste management and traffic streamlining. This will help doctors detect diseases like breast cancer. - Gauri Shankar Antaaj
