Tesla Model Y Is Not Finding Buyers, Discount Up To Rs 2 Lakh, Entry Is Fading In India

Decline in sales of Tesla Model Y in India.

Auto Desk, New Delhi. Just a few months after its entry in India, Tesla is facing challenges regarding the sales of its popular electric SUV Model Y. According to Bloomberg report, due to lack of demand as expected, Tesla is now offering a discount of up to Rs 2 lakh to select customers. However, this discount is not an official price cut but is being given on a case-by-case basis during test drives and customer interactions.

How many Model Y units did Tesla order in India?

The report claims that Tesla imported around 300 units of Model Y into India last year. But even after several months, about one-third of these units are still said to be unsold. To quickly clear this remaining stock, the company has started an incentive scheme of up to Rs 2 lakh on select vehicles.

This discount is not for everyone

According to Bloomberg, this discount of Tesla is not open discount for every customer. This strategy shows that the company is focusing on selling certain vehicles quickly rather than reducing prices on a large scale. That means this is a kind of tactical sales strategy, not a change in the prices of the entire model.

Premium price became the biggest hurdle

Tesla has started in India with only one model (Model Y) and that too as a fully imported unit. According to the report, after import duty is imposed, the price of Model Y reaches around ₹ 60 lakh. This price moves it straight into the luxury EV segment, limiting its customer base. In a market like India, where price and local support play a big role in purchasing, such premium pricing can be a major deterrent for many customers.

Booking done, but why less registration?

According to the report, there was a good response for Model Y in the initial phase and hundreds of bookings were also registered. But in comparison, the registrations of vehicles have been much less. According to some reports, many potential customers had second thoughts when they compared the Model Y with electric SUVs from companies like BMW and BYD. The report also said that due to better pricing and stronger local support in some options, customers were inclined towards the other side.
