Jagran correspondent, Bhagalpur. The government's ambitious plan to provide tap water to every household in four Mahadalit dominated wards of Khankitta Panchayat of Sabour block headquarters remains a mere show off. In ward numbers two, three, six and seven of the Panchayat, not a single drop of water has come from the tap for the last one and a half years. Due to this, the people there have to wander from place to place to arrange water.
This situation persists due to the complete apathy of the PHED department. Despite repeated requests from the villagers to repair the broken water supply pipes at various places, the department officials remain inactive. According to the villagers, at some places the pipe is damaged and at some places the pipe itself is missing. People from Mahadalit and minority BPL families live in these four wards.
About five hundred families have to struggle for water every day. Under compulsion, people are carrying dirty and unsafe water from far away places, which is adversely affecting the health of children, elderly and women. Local people say that a water supply pump has been installed, but it barely reaches ten houses. The remaining area is completely thirsty. Till date, the department has not taken any concrete steps towards repair or restoration of the pipeline.
In this regard, Chief Sunil Kumar Choudhary said that he is tired of appealing to the departmental officers to the District Magistrate for the last one and a half years for the solution of this problem. Talks were held several times with the local JE, but far from finding a solution, till now no official has come to inspect the site.
Due to this, even basic facilities like drinking water are not available to the poor families of the four wards here. The chief says that every day villagers come to him with water problems, but when the department itself is turning a blind eye, how can a solution be found.
