Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha.
Digital Desk, New Delhi. Comments were made about the attire of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on the budget day, to which she has responded. The Finance Minister called it prejudice against women.
Every year, while presenting the budget, her saree attracts people's attention. Sitharaman said such comments are rarely motivated by malice, but rather reflect assumptions that commonly come up in everyday conversations.
'What kind of clothes are you wearing?'
"It's not that we consciously encourage it, but it is present within us and often comes up in conversations. Comments like 'What kind of clothes is she wearing? Or what is she doing?' shows how women are viewed, not as individuals with ideas and capabilities," she said.
'I feel like challenging directly'
The Finance Minister said that he often feels like challenging such comments directly. Sitharaman said, "I can tell them, it should not be done this way. As a woman, we will never look at a man and say that he should not do it this way. We will not do that at all."
She further added, "I don't think such comments are usually made with bad intentions, but sometimes hidden biases come to the fore. I will share my experience. Every year, it becomes a topic of discussion around me, people ask, what are you going to wear on Budget day?"
His comment came at a time when everyone's eyes were on the Union Budget speech. Sitharaman delivered a speech lasting 124 minutes and outlined the government's economic priorities for the coming financial year.
